New Blog Design + Giveaway 2013

i have a feeling we're not in kansas anymore."

I once read about a study done to test human "follow" patterns and herd mentality.  There was a test subject put in a room with 19 people.  The test subject was under the impression that these 19 folks were other testers, but in reality they were "in" on the experiment.  They all did a brief written test, then they had some group projects to do.  A simple math problem was put up on a board (something like 63 + 24).  As the group discussed, they all instantly agreed the answer to the problem was 97.  The one tester was quiet and hesitant.  He counted on his fingers.  But in the end, he just said what everyone else did.  "Yeah, 97."  You've probably seen those youtube pranks where a large group of people will turn a corner and come running and screaming down the alley.  Often the clueless passerby will join in and run with them!  Why run? I DON'T KNOW! BUT EVERYONE ELSE IS! NINETY SEEEEVEN!!!

Launching a new blog design at the beginning of the year feels a little flock like to me (I'm obviously rounding up the group in the back).  Winter, after holidays, is obviously the most practical time for a primarily spring to fall photographer to get other business tasks done.  Last winter I was set ablaze thanks to Alt Summit and I decided to re-do my blog and start writing out my love story.  I also instituted the Enjoy Project.  I wanted to start taking the gradual turn into expanding my vision for this blog, as well as my vision for my career and daily life.  I was single, renting a room with my friends and on the verge of so many bigs.

One year later,  I'm a wife who shares a happy apartment with a stud-muffin.  I'm a mother, who shares her body with a little son.  I'm writing more, cooking more (well, I was cooking more... now I'm eating more. haha.), I'm taking steps to figure out how to actually turn a blog series into a real book.  We're taking our hard-earned cash to Oklahoma to finish building our house.  We're talking often about that soup & sandwich shop we want to open someday.  I'm taking fewer weddings, and more "other shoots."  I realize that I love wedding photography, but I don't love a lot of wedding photography.  I hope to shoot weddings until my hips break, but I find myself far more interested, inspired and emotional when my shoots vary - from promotional shoots, maternity shoots, documentary style shooting, portraits, babies, weddings, home life.  This goes against what I had been taught.  "Don't try to be average at a lot of things!  Focus on ONE thing! Specialize in one area!"  For some people, that is probably great advice.  But for me, I need the variety.  I do better in all areas when every week has brand new events.  Maybe that is why I loved sports?  You practice and practice, but have no idea what to expect come game time.  A music recital isn't like that.  You practice and practice and practice your piece... and then... you play... that same piece!  Just like you practiced! (hopefully.)

All of that to say, I needed a site that could keep up with my varied interests and pursuits.  A place that looked like, you know, a grown woman's site.  It was time.  97! ;)  The dear, talented Hannah Nicole took over my giant dream.  She is the one to thank for the new branding and design.  Please sing her praises and love her a lot.   Hannah, you're absolutely one-of-a-kind and dazzling.

  7. Since I've already bought my ticket for my summer in Omaha with my best friend, I'd probably save the airline moolah for a 2014 adventure. ;) I'd venture into the world of non-Hamburger-Helper cooking with this scrumptious looking cookbook, use the leather journal as my next writing journal, and I have more than one Etsy shop in mind to use that $100 on. ;)

  8. Um. But seriously. Hannah did an AMAZING job on your redesign. That chick has got some mad graphic design skills -- I'm totally digging this new design. :)

  9. Love the new layout! I would totally dig the Etsy gift card! It would help put a dent in this: http://www.etsy.com/listing/100290367/superhero-nursery-alphabet?ref=usr_faveitems that I've been saving for my little man's room. Congrats on your big news as well! Many blessings to you :)

  10. I love your new blog design, and this giveaway sounds amazing! I'd love to use the Southwest card to fly SOMEWHERE--I've never flown before. Plus, I've had my eye on some Etsy jewelry focusing on specific countries around the world, and I've almost filled up my current journal! :) Looking forward to hearing more about your little boy--so exciting!

Fly: I've been dreaming of traveling to Europe for as long as I can remember! Etsy: There are so many things on Etsy that I'd love to have (on a college student budget, needs take priority over wants). I absolutely adore smittenkitchen and my passion for cooking might be partially satiated with this cookbook. In my journal I'd write college experiences so I can go back with my kids and be like, "Um, yeah, totally went through this."

    Love the new blog design!

  18. I would most definitely use the Southwest money to put towards my trip to LA. I'm dying to go and since I just need a little help, this is perfect! I would also use that lovely journal for my Small Group Bible study. I'm getting towards the end of mine and that is so cute!

    ReplyDelete
  19. I love to cook, I would try them out on my little family. I have a best friend in California that I haven't been able to visit. I was just thinking yesterday that if we kept a journal we would always be able to look back and see how mightily God blesses us and how is always there with us.

  23. These are all such exciting prizes, and the new design is awesome (hi hannah!).

I'd fly anywhere and everywhere if I had the chance, but on the top of my list right now I suppose would be a seattle trip (which might end up a road trip this summer), and a end-of-school trip to visit a bunch of friends at our online-school gathering in Pennsylvania.

I've been eyeing some dainty wood and gold etsy necklaces recently.

Notebooks are always welcome to me, I recently went through stacks of old notebooks, I seem to never throw any out, and they live in the top of my closet, sheaves of memories, gathering dust.

And the cookbook. FOOD. smitten kitchen's blog has always been a favorite, everything is so beautifully photographed and mouthwatering. I would feed my fam with the recipes in it, and maybe even throw that birthday party I have been considering throwing (with gold balloons, yummy food, and people I love).

(p.s. I love all the quotes you post every time, they make me smile.)

    ReplyDelete
  24. Love the new blog design! I've always dreamed of going to Scotland! I would put the gift card towards that. The journal would be a perfect way to record all the memories and sights on the trip! I love to cook and have a big family of taste testers :) Oh, and don't get me started on all the things I could find on Etsy! :) Super excited about this giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  25. pinned it! I would cook all the dreamy creations in that cookbook, skip buying my next journal, and book a flight to see all the aspens turn yellow in colorado next fall! love your new design :)

  26. Oh, and I pinned it and shared it on Facebook :)

  27. The cookbook would be fantastic -- I'm usually happiest with a good meal in front of me.

The Southwest card would be splendid -- Colorado is calling my name, again; I want to go back

The Etsy shopping would be phenomenal -- baubles and goodies for all the ladies in my family, right?!

However, the journal would be the most precious and rewarding...there's a promise I made to the man I love, to write him every day. Even if we're angry or sad; even when we aren't speaking. Definitely when we miss one another, and are unsure of the future.
One hundred letters later, and I haven't missed a day. But, I am running low on journal space. And paper enough for one hundred more letters would be a wonderful gift.

[I am getting out your beautiful new design via Pinterest, Instagram, and in a few, Twitter, as well. It's clean, engaging, and appealing]

  28. Kristen- you are so great- just thought you should be reminded of this :-) With the Southwest gift card, I would take a trip to Annapolis to visit a dear friend. I used to live out that way and I don't see her as often as I'd like. Annapolis has a special place in my heart :-) I'm new to Etsy, so it would be great to see what there is! With the journal, I would write about this little babe that is growing inside me :-) My husband and I are expecting our first child in June- I think about 2 weeks after you! Thank you for the giveaway!

  29. Wonderful giveaway, and Hannah did an awesome job on you design.
I would like to fly to NC to visit my sister. I have been eyeing some printed tee's on Etsy. I love cooking, and would love to try some of the Smitten Kitchen recipes for a special occasion. If I got that beautiful journal it would give me a little push to start journaling.

  30. I'd have everyone over to eat!! Maybe not all that the same time, I'm not that on top of things, but I would try. Then I would fly to New York to visit my best friend, and make her something delicious to eat. Following which, we would write down all of our lists and dreams and hopes and everythings. And as a last hurrah, we would buy ourselves some fabulous jewelry--maybe sterling silver Washington States. :)
Beautiful beautiful blog, Hannah works magic! But so do you. :D

I'd probably use the southwest to fly my Mum out here when I have my baby. And a journal, please, there is no need for a special reason to need another journal! :o)

  51. Hey Kristen! I am LOVING the new blog layout and such. What would I do with each of these? Well, I would use the cookbook in my dorm to escape the dreaded Aarmark food in the cafeteria. The Southwest gift card would go to my friend, Haley who is going on a missions trip and could use it toward her airfare this summer! A few friends and I are taking a ten day road trip across the USA for Spring Break (Who says college road trips are cliche?) and I've been looking for a cute journal to use as a scrap book. I don't even know where to begin on Etsy, everything is fabulous! These are fabulous gifts, and I know if it isn't me, SOMEONE AWESOME will be blessed by them :) Loving the new blog (and ANXIOUSLY awaiting part 14).

  52. Honestly, I can't even begin to tell you how perfect this little giveaway is! Alright, maybe I can... I'm moving into my first place and gonna be cooking my own meals, I desperately want to visit a friend in South Carolina but don't have the $$ for the flight, I am just about to finish filling a very special journal with very special thoughts and need to find a new one, and there is a little shop that sells bracelets on Etsy and the profits go to free kiddos from a corrupt orphanage in Haiti! Woo!

  63. I'd love to use the Southwest giftcard to fly and visit my grandparents. I'm in Massachusetts and they're in Ohio, and I'm in the middle of working on a heritage video project- basically a mini documentary of their lives and how they grew up in South Africa and then transferred their entire lives to the States when they didn't agree with the treatment of blacks in the time of Apartheid. The journal would certainly be great to jot down questions that come up from browsing their old pictures!

  64. Love the redesign! It's so sophisticated!
I would fly to my grandmother's farm in Tennessee with my best friend, where we would cook up a storm with the Smitted Kitchen cookbook and then eat what we made on beautiful pottery plates purchased off Etsy. Of course, we'd document everything with pictures which we would later paste into the journal. I'm smiling just dreaming about it!

  95. First off, your new blog design is AMAZING because Hannah Nicole is REALLY amazing. I don't know how she does it. :)
Cookbook? Gracious, who wouldn't love a Smitten Kitchen cookbook! I'm sure I'd find some favorites. :)
Southwest? Well, I don't have anywhere I'm planning on flying to any time soon, but I'd save it for if I ever do.
Etsy? Wow, I'd go crazy with an Etsy gift card...soooo much cute stuff on there!!
Journal? I'd probably use it for the Grand Trip Out West my family is planning for this summer. :)

I would use the SW giveaway to go to my best friend's weddings (which I'm in!!!! Eeeeek!) in the far away land of Iowa. The Etsy card would help with my upcoming, much-needed, professional wardrobe (yay for graduating college!). As I will be graduating soon and starting out on my own I'll need some cooking lessons from that handy cookbook. And, finally, what better way to record a brand new start than in a super cute journal? :)

  103. This is an awesome giveaway! With an Etsy gift card, I would get the mother's stacking rings I have been eyeing for a long long time, or artwork for the kids' room! With the Southwest card…I would probably save it for when my cousin has a baby so I could fly down to Georgia and take some purty newborn photos. With the cookbook, I would love to wine and dine my man, since he needs some fattening up! And with the journal…well that would be perfect for my challenge to read through the Bible this year. Because pretty journals are like a brand new cute pair of underpants; a boring one would do just fine, but a fancy one just makes you feel better about yourself!

I'd like to put the southwest giftgard toward travelling to seattle for my birthday. i've never been, i'm such a nomad/wanderer with so much wanderlust in my soul. i don't *need* to go but i want to be adventurous! i love to fellowship and spend time with friends, especially cooking with friends. *insert cookbook* i just love it. i'd use the etsy towards a birthday present for a friend :) the journal? golly, that'd be the icing on the cake i LOVE to write.

thanks for the opportunity to win such fabulous prizes!!

  106. Hello there! Okay, so I'm a semi-new reader of your [fantastic] blog and I read every single part of your Oh My My My story last Friday… sweetest thing ever. You are such a talented writer and photographer, and it's been such a joy getting to hear your story.

Moving on to this whole giveaway thing…
I absolutely love flying and adventuring! (except sometimes close connections are terrifying to make alone… I'm only 16 and I had a nightmarish experience flying to Minnesota alone.) I would probably go somewhere totally random and just explore the town, taking picture after picture. Maybe a few in film.

Thanks for putting together such a fun giveaway! The Southwest gift card is ingenious. :)

    xx.

  108. Hi Kristen!

I retweeted and liked the giveaway, and have already liked your FB page. (Don't have an Instagram).
I would use the SW giftcard towards spending a few days in Key West with an old friend over Spring Break. I would use the Etsy giftcard to buy some witty valentines I have been eyeing (http://www.etsy.com/listing/100372442/pick-up-line-card-anniversary-card) as well as some Katie Daisy prints (http://www.etsy.com/listing/87896005/pathless-woods-8x10-print?utm_campaign=Share&utm_medium=PageTools&utm_source=Pinterest). I have not heard of this cookbook before but I could always use some practice in the kitchen. :-) Lastly, I really enjoy writing and note-taking. I would use the journal as an on-the-go tablet to take down little bits of inspiration while at school and in the city.

I very much enjoy your blog. Thank you for sharing!

    Sincerely,

    Shaunessy Hanrahan

there are so many things I would do with a southwest giftcard, but for now, I'd probably save it for some fabulous adventure that God will throw my way. (I know it's coming someday, soon.)
etsy? I'll take everything. maybe I'd buy a new print for my room (that might encourage me to paint it!) or some pretty notecards! :)
the cookbook? I'd never stop eating. making food is so fun!
and the journal? I'd write love letters to my boy. because I love him.

p.s. pinned the giveaway picture on pinterest, but it wouldn't link to your name! Not sure why, because I follow you... :)

If I win, I'd fly to visit a friend in Ohio or go to help another friend who lives in another state who is going to have a baby. With the etsy giftcard I would basically have tons of fun searching the site for gifts and giveaway items and pretties. :)) With the cookbook, oh my. My sisters and I would simply have so much fun trying out the recipes and becoming better cooks in the kitchen. And lastly, the journal. Ah, yes, I've always wanted a leather journal! I would let words come and write from the heart and perhaps even work on short stories.

This is so much fun, Thanks for hosting this giveaway! :))

  133. I absolutely LOVE the new design! It's so fitting for you! The giveaway idea is just an awesome bonus and also a fabulous idea.

I could totally use everything that is in the giveaway, but maybe even pass some of it on myself. I'd love to send my mom or dad to visit their family they never get to see....or just tell them to take a trip celebrating their wedding anneversaries that they haven't really been able to before....def would be using the southwest gift card.

The cookbook....ahh my boyfriend says I don't cook enough for him to which I promptly respond, "I don't know what to cook!" So then with the cookbook, I guess I'd have no excuse right?! I do love to cook, don't get me wrong....I just always draw a blank when it comes to things to make!

The journal....you along with others, inspire people to write and really explore their creative side. I would love to get back into writing.....definitely would be using that!

And Etsy. The neatest things and random, but some totally useful stuff on there.....I love looking at all of the stuff on there!

***I have a question....is there a limit on how many times one can enter/repost? Does it help if it's more than one entry, or is that pretty much it?? Thanks!

The cookbook, so I can learn to make people's stomachs happy.
The airplane money, so I can travel north in April.
The journal, so I can have another place to scribble my thoughts.
The Etsy money, so I can fill my room with more creative-ness.

Oh, and by the way, I re-tweeted, shared on FB (already liked it!), Instagramed, Pinned and commented.... haven't gotten around to the blog post yet :) Happy Tuesday!

I've never flown before, so I'd be stoked about going, um, anywhere. I'd cook (most likely dessert) for my parents and brothers and sister. For Etsy I'd look into a camera strap, maybe a formal dress, or unhealthy amounts of earrings. And as for the journal, I've gone through 12-14 journals in the last 8 years, and have every intention of continuing as long as I can. :)

    Thank you, Kristen. :)

  136. Loooove it! it's just perfect! Oh, and I'm so happy to finally hear someone else say they like shooting alittle bit of everything. Needing to mix it up....i'm so there!

So the cookbook...I would use it to expand my very limited list of foods that I make. I love to cook, but I feel like I always make the same thing!

The plane ticket...well, goodness it wouldn't be hard to find a place to go with that!! (Maybe your workshop in April? hehe) SO many possibilities!

Who doesn't want an awesome new journal?

Etsy would just be so fun. Then I could finally order all of those little things that I don't need to spend money on =)

Just tweeted, instagramed, and pinned it =)

Would love to take a little trip with my hubby to Colorado.

I love your blog. Your honesty. Your happiness. The way you write like you're talking to us.

Hmm so why do I want this?

I'd use the flight money to see one of my best friends on the east coast who I've never actually gotten to meet in person but I met through my blog.

I'd love the journal to record what God is showing me and the new dreams he's teaching me to dream.

The Etsy card would most definitely be used for clothes! I haven't really bought any new clothing in two years! (This is challenging when you try and have a fashion blog...)

And the cook book? Well I love trying new things and I love to see people and enjoy yummy food!

Love the grown up site redesign!

  140. Also if I were to win this giveaway I would do alot with what I win.
I would first off use the Southwest Airlines card to travel to Washington DC this summer. I'm going to Uganda on a missions trip and I first fly out to Washington DC. This money will help tremendously.

Second I am continually running out of journals as it is. During my quite times and devotion time I use journals. So this lovely journal will be added to my collection.

I would dine and/wine with my non-existent man. lol Maybe by the time I win this my answer will change but hey why not be optimistic.

Lastly I would use the Etsy card to by a lovely headdress I have my eye on for a fun fashion photoshoot I'm planning this spring. :)

I hope I win! Have a great day!

  142. this design! Incorporating your "alter" designs and all these smiles? It kills me! (in a good way.) Mmmkay, so first, I'd put the Southwest giftcard towards bringing my dearest Woodbine, MD family down for my wedding. Etsy money would have to go towards some sort of sweet gift for my man. I'd love to use the cookbook to convince my husband-to-be that I can actually cook ;) and the journal? I've written pages and pages of random lists and notes and sermons and songs and prayers and whatnot since I learned to write. I have a storage bin full of journals. I might not neeeeeed a new journal, but I can definitely find a reason to use it. :) Thanks Kristen! Love this!

  146. I totally didn't realize that I was supposed to describe how I would use ALL of the items! I thought they were separate giveaways! (I'm a natural blonde. It always explains things.)

SO. I've wanted to visit my dear friend and fellow photographer, Meredith for awhile. I can't afford the flight, and the $100 would make it doable :) That would be a dream come true! The cookbook would be wonderful for my future home. And as for the journal, it so happens that I JUST filled up my last leather one for my man. For two years, I journaled to him. For him. And I would love to fill another in between now and when we're married.

  147. I would fly to see my best friends who live in TX/NC since I haven't seen them in 3 months. I would use the journal to explore my creative writing & poetry side. The cookbook would be used to cook healthier & tastier meals for my family since I do most of the cooking since my Mom works 9 hour days with over an hour commute on top of that. And for the etsy giftcard, I'd buy a handstamped necklace with the names of those dearest to me on it. I tweeted about the giveaway :) Thanks so much Kristen!! The blog is fabulous!!

  149. I pinned your giveaway on my Pinterest (Catherine Spitznagel) page and tagged you in a comment.

But I'm commenting additionally because I was unexpectantly challenged by your request to list what we'd do with the giveaway items. Plagued - like most Americans - with the desire to possess and consume, my first thought was to keep all items and use them for my unsatisfied desires.

But then I had a thought: giveaway the giveaway. My sister is newly-married and would love the cookbook as an addition to her "What to cook for my Hubby?" arsenal. I have a long distance friend who has never visited the area I live in (the Gulf Coast! Sun and sand!) - and she deserves a vacation. Lastly, my mother is not only a lover of all things homemade, but a producer of all things homemade. And, bless her heart, has only recently discovered the wonder of Etsy. Through many crocheted throws and slippers, she has earned herself a discretionary Etsy fund.

I would, however, divulge my selfishness concerning the journal. I am a senior level college student, graduating college with a BA in May. My mind is overflowing with entrepreneurial ideas. Inspired by yourself, other self-starters, and a journal filled to the brim with secret dreams - I just might act on one of those ideas.

I would use the journal as my go-to for jotting down inspirational quotes, random thoughts, and the like. In 2013 one of my goals is to cook my way through a single cookbook, this would be the one. I would use the Etsy giftcard to buy a striped tote bag for my summer adventures. :) Thanks for hosting this awesome giveaway!

Ok, I would fly to Colorado to visit friends. My current journal is almost full so getting a new, beautiful leather one would be perfect timing! A new cookbook would be put to use by making a special new recipe for my family. Best of all thought would be the etsy giftcard, but there are so many things amazing things listed on that wonderful site that I have no idea how I'd decide what to use it for!!! I won't think that far ahead considering my luck with giveaways:)
And by the way, lovely new site!

with the journal, i'd make it into a "smash book" of my travels and missions trips.
not sure what i'd do with the cookbook...give it to you? ;)
and with the etsy card, i'd probably buy some of the typography/quote posters i've had my eyes on.

  169. The new design is awesome, awesome. SO happy for you! Oh, and with the winnings, I would dream even bigger. The SW card would start my hubs and I off on our someday-Ireland trip. I'd journal all my crazy stream of conscious thoughts and hopes for this coming year. I'd cook with my hubs and use all sorts of delicious recipes from the cookbook after the kids fell asleep at night. We'll laugh and taste-test and act like teenagers. And on Etsy? I'd buy scrumptious yarn for more knitting projects. If I win, that's what I'd do. If I don't, I'll figure out a way to make my dreams happen either way. Promise. :)

  172. I'd fly off to Atlanta to visit my brother wearing new jewelry I bought with my Etsy card. I'd read the cookbook on the flight and use the journal as my prayer journal at night.

  178. I would use the etsy card on new mittens and a hat for the winter -- so many cute ones on there -- and I'd use the sw gc on a trip to visit my cousin in georgia and I'd love to jot down all the details about this year in the new journal. it's fun to read years later :)
